Healthy Foundations for 2015: Detoxification

Foot on Scale PictureIt is the time of year where we may be feeling the effects of the extra activities and extra foods and “treats” we enjoyed over the last couple months. Many quick start and quick fix “do-it yourself” detox programs are advertised for weight loss and improving health. From Hollywood stars like Gwyneth Paltrow endorsing her favorite cleanse, to stores like Walmart who carry all kinds of liver/intestinal cleanses and teas, many patients come into my office asking me if I think that they should do a detox cleanse that they hear about from one source or another.

My response to that question is twofold:

  • Firstly, do you have trouble with losing weight?
  • Do you have high cholesterol?
  • Do you have high blood pressure?
  • Do you have blood sugar problems?
  • Do you come from a family with diabetes, high cholesterol and obesity?
  • Do you feel tired?
  • Do you feel older than you are?
  • Do you have low libido/sex drive?
  • Do you eat non-organic and packaged foods?
  • Do you live near a high traffic area?
  • Are you dealing with on-going high levels of stress?
  • Do you have trouble sleeping?
  • Have you had an occupational exposure to chemicals?

If you answered “YES” to any of these questions, purification may be what you indeed need. Secondly, while it can be a very important step towards losing weight and improving health, it is important to know more about how a proper detoxifying cleanse should function to differentiate between safe and fad as there are many on the market with claims that are just too good to be true.

Many cultures have long used bowel cleansing, saunas, steam rooms and fasting as a way to “cleanse” or “purify the body.” Research has shown that the body’s ability to neutralize or detoxify substances can have an impact to one’s overall health. According to the International Journal of Cancer, “It is clear that environmental and lifestyle factors are key determinants of human disease – accounting for 75 percent of most cancers.” Thus, anytime you are able to reduce weight and get the toxins out of your system; you are helping to reduce by percentage, future health-related issues.

The major change experienced in the past 100 years has been the impact of our culture’s “mass production” environment on our health! My own personal 34 plus years of clinical experience has allowed me to witness the increased complexities in helping people deal with decreased energy levels, hormonal imbalances and difficulties in losing weight. We live in a toxic environment and our bodies are overwhelmed and bombarded by toxins every day through the
digestive tract, by food additives, contaminated soil, in soft drinks, etc. The average American consumes 15 pounds of additives and over 250 pounds of sugar per year! The U.S. allows over 10, 000 chemical additives to our food supply. In 2008, the Toxic Release Inventory Report revealed 3,849,793,153 pounds of toxins were released in all industries for all chemicals. Toxins also enter our body through the skin and lungs through every day grooming products like perfumes, hairsprays and lotions as well as, the air we breathe. Because of this, many people are in a state of toxic overload and can only handle so much of this before organ dysfunction, inflammation and some form of symptoms appear. That’s why the majority of our diseases of today are degenerative –which takes years and years to eventually become symptomatic.

Research reveals that toxins have been shown to be a contributing factor in many diseases and disorders. Many studies demonstrated that toxins often increase the intensity and duration of the inflammatory response due to tissue injury and prolonged tissue recovery times. These chronic conditions are exacerbated by the obstruction of the immune system and its natural ability to repair itself by a continuous influx of toxins. Toxins can have a direct effect on the body and more commonly contribute metabolic interferences to the endocrine system.

The good news is that toxin levels can be reduced as whole food complexes can have a pronounced effect on the mobilization and clearance of various toxins that are stored in body tissue. Elizabeth Jeffrey, Ph.D. recently explained in an article, “Having reviewed the mechanisms of action of whole food components, it appears easy to understand how multiple food components can trigger up-regulation of detoxification systems that whole foods and mixtures may provide greater effects than a single component.”

Simply put, a good liver purification program uses condensed/dehydrated whole foods, which cannot bother your system in any way, shape or form or interact negatively with any pharmaceuticals you might be taking.

The body has 3 main options when dealing with toxins: It buries them in body fat, deposits them in tissues or removes them utilizing organs such as the liver, blood, skin, kidneys, colon and lungs. The key factor is in understanding these substances must be detoxified (neutralized) by the liver in order to become harmless or removed from the body.

While there are many fad cleanses on the market, a whole foods liver purification program is one of the safest, most gentle and extremely effective in purifying, nourishing and maintaining a healthy body and weight from the inside out. Supporting phase I-III detoxification pathways, it has been clinically shown to be effective. A liver purification program requires you to make new and healthier choices for yourself at least, for a 21 day time-frame. You’ll learn to turn to whole, unprocessed, preservative-free foods, lots of water, tasty fruit shakes and 2 whole food supplements. During the process, you will become more sensitive of what your body needs to stay healthy with the side benefit of shedding some extra weight! Additionally, it is a foundational step to putting the body in motion for further weight loss if needed.
